SOLD

Energeia roughly translates as ‘being-at-work,’ based on Aristotle’s theory of actuality and potentiality in motion, in Physics. It determines that the end and completion of a being is its being-at-work; that is, exerting its natural forces and properties, acting according to its own nature. In Aristotle’s theory of time, the now acts as the link of time, in which the now manifests as the midpoint of a beginning and an end; however, the now is not a point of rest, for it always divides potentially, calibrating itself to a time that is not now (Physics IV. 222a10). Moreover, particular predicated entities do not come about as primary substances in Aristotle, but always consist in a process of ‘coming to be’ and ‘passing away’: “a limited thing [at each stage], yet always one thing followed by another. The final cause of a thing, or its telos, is not to be misinterpreted here for a quantifiable, linear sense of finitude, but rather the magnitude of the now as equally closed and open, conditioned by past and future causes and yet distinct from them. In magnitudes, what was taken remains, while in the case of time and human beings, what is taken is destroyed but in such a way that the supply does not give out” (Physics III.6.206b), suggesting a principle of energetic conservation in the cosmos.
