The snake as symbol of mystery, transformation, intelligence— as well as a shedding of the old skin to regenerate and begin anew. The painting began with collaged excerpts from the Yoga Sutras 1.1-1.5 and the Bhagavad Gita 8.6-8.19, on the fundamental tenets of yogic practice as an invocation to the now and sacred service through acts of love. “Now are the teachings of yoga,” and yoga is the “stilling/restraint of the whirlpools of the mind field.” Charcoal drawn flowers coil around the figure, wispy but dramatic, the snake’s thickly textured sheath like flecks of gold across opal waters. Energetic yellow washes against the dark curves give it a pop and high contrast look.
