Mixed media oil painting on canvas, 12x16 inches.
A few months ago, I stood near the Lovers’ Bridge in Shek O Village, watching the waves in the South China sea crash against the rocks for a long time. A silence washed over me that felt almost foreign and timeworn, unvisited for perhaps years. I wondered if I could see it again with fresh eyes. There were multiple counter movements: the outline of jagged dust yellow rock against the burst of white water, the flow of the wave lines raking across the surface and the ragged lines of the rocks, the waves curling and swarming near the shore like billowing cotton clouds. The tensions of the countermovements were indifferent— enduring, turning, without organic desire. It felt replenishing and yet there was nothing special about it. I left no trace in this place, the last time I had visited, but it seemed as if it remembered me. This painting is inspired by this experience.
